College Admissions Testing Information

SAT

SAT and The College Board

The CollegeBoard is the organization that administers the SAT.  You can utilize this site to not only register for the SAT but to prepare for the test.  They also have some great information on how to locate the right college for you.

Students need to sign up for the SAT I (also know as the SAT Reasoning Test).  This test is one of the two college admissions tests that are accepted by all post secondary institutions.

The SAT is offered at Rensselaer Central High School in December and May and at other various schools in the area in October, November, January, March and June.  Make certain to include the RCHS six digit school code (152950) on your registration.  This guarantees that your scores will be reported back to RCHS and included on your transcript, possibly saving time and money during the college application process.

ACT

ACT - American College Testing

The ACT is a college admissions test that is accepted by all post secondary institutions.  This test is in a slightly different format than the SAT and is considered an aptitude test more than a reasoning test.  The ACT also has a section on Science that the SAT does not.

The ACT also offers the ability to do test prep at their website.

The ACT is offered Rensselaer Central High School in September and June and at other various sites in the area in October, December, February, and April.  Make certain to include the RCHS six digit school code (152950) on your registration.  This guarantees that your score will be reported back to RCHS and included on your transcript, possibly saving time and money during the college application process.

PREP

Help in preparing for the SAT and the ACT

Besides the organizations who sponsor prep material for their own tests, we offer a couple of options to assist you (the student) in preparing for  the college admissions tests.  We have always informed our student of a website called Number2.com.  This site is a free test prep site for many standardized tests and can be accessed anytime from any computer.

Two other web sites with test prep web sites that have come to our attention are:

www.petersons.com/terc/ and www.march2success.com

The later is sponsored by the army but no information need be shared with the military to use the site.

Beginning with the 2009-2010 school year Rensselaer Central Schools will be offering, free of charge to any Rensselaer Central student, the use of the SAT/ACT prep portion of the Nova Net Software.  If you are interested in this option, please contact your counselor to get started.
